History

When the Prophet (pbuh) went to sleep every night, he always placed his right hand under the right cheek and recited Allahumma Bismika Amutu Wa Ahya. Through this dua, the Prophet (p.b.u.h) left it at the mercy of the Almighty to decide whether he would die or wake up the next morning.

Important information

Remembering the name of the Almighty before or during certain occasions is the greatest way to show your love for him. Reciting the dua Allahumma Bismika Amutu Wa Ahya ensures that you trust in The Almighty to decide if you die or live during your sleep. The dua has another version, بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا (Bismika Allahumma Amutu Wa Ahya), which means “With Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.”

Both versions of this dua are authentic as they have been recorded in the hadith. The Prophet (pbuh) recited this dua before going to sleep and after waking up he would repeat, “Alhamdulillahil Ladhi Ahyana Ba’da Ma Amatana, Wa Ilaihin-nushur.” It means, “All praise is owed to Allah, Who has brought us back to life after He has caused us to die, and the return is dedicated to Him.”
