Third Eye Meditation is a practice of focusing on your third eye or Bhrumadya, located between and just above your eyebrows. This meditation helps you open the third eye and grants you insight into the inner world(1).

Introduction

Bhrumadya is the front part of the Ajna Chakra(1), also known as the Third Eye Chakra(2). Third Eye Meditation is a very important ancient practice. Through this meditation, you can awaken and free your Divine Energy(1). Regular practice of Concentration (Third Eye) Meditation can ensure this, but it can take anywhere from days to an entire lifetime, or beyond to attain the result. It solely depends on the spiritual evolution of the practitioner’s soul. The meditation also calms your mind, helping reduce anger and stress(3).

History/Origins

Kaula-Jnana-Nirnaya of Matsyendranatha first recognized the energy centers located in our body as Chakras(4). It was the first text to present a Six-Chakra system, and the Seven-Chakra system was first introduced in Yoga Upanishads(4). The Third Eye Chakra is one of the seven Chakras. Third Eye Meditation is a significant practice that can activate the Ajna Chakra. It is the only meditation taught by Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita(1).

Benefits of Third Eye Meditation

According to a research paper by M C Rajalakshmi(5), Concentration (Third Eye) Meditation is effective in treating insomnia. The research revealed that regularly practicing this meditation can lead to an improvement in the quality of sleep. Another study by Balaji Deekshitulu P. V(6) shows that Chakra-based meditations have the ability to significantly reduce stress, allowing the practitioners to relax. Another research(7) also revealed that the inner light or energy awakening during a meditation practice can improve mental and psychological health.
